October at the gym: building your routine before the winter slump
September can feel like a fresh start. New routines, back-to-school energy, getting organised after summer and perhaps even a renewed enthusiasm for getting back into the gym.
Then October arrives and the mornings are darker, the evenings are drawing in, the weather is becoming a little less predictable and suddenly that motivation you had a few weeks ago isn't quite as easy to find.
But here's the thing: you don't need to wait for motivation to come back!
October can actually be one of the best times of year to build a fitness routine that lasts.
Stop waiting to feel motivated
As a Fitness Manager, one of the things I see time and time again is people putting far too much pressure on themselves to be motivated every time they train. The reality is that motivation comes and goes. Some days you'll walk into the gym feeling fantastic and ready to smash your workout. Other days, getting through the front door might feel like the biggest achievement of the day!
And that's okay.
Consistency doesn't mean that you never miss a workout or that every session is your best one. It means finding a way to keep coming back. Maybe your workout is shorter than planned. Maybe you lift a little lighter. Maybe you spend 20 minutes on the bike rather than doing the full session you had planned.
It all counts!
What do you want from fitness?
Fitness doesn't have to be all about losing weight or changing how you look.
Take a moment to think about what you actually want exercise to give you.
Maybe you want more energy.
Maybe you want to feel stronger.
Perhaps you want to improve your fitness so you can keep up with your children or grandchildren, get back to a hobby you love, feel more confident or simply have more energy for everyday life.
Maybe exercise is your opportunity to switch off after a stressful day.
There is no single reason why people exercise, and there is no single definition of being fit.
Your reason is enough.
Make the gym fit around your life
One of the biggest barriers to exercise is the belief that you need to have a spare hour, several days a week, in order for it to be worthwhile.
You really don't.
A 30-minute workout is better than no workout. Two sessions a week are better than waiting for the mythical week where you have time for five. And if Monday doesn't happen, there's always Tuesday.
At MDL Fitness, our 24-hour access means you can fit your training around your life rather than trying to fit your life around the gym.
Early morning before work? Go for it. A lunchtime session? Absolutely. Late evening once the kids are in bed? We've got you.
The perfect routine isn't necessarily the one that looks impressive on paper. It's the one that you can actually stick to.
Keep your workouts simple
You don't need a complicated programme every time you walk into the gym. If you're short on time, a simple full-body session can be incredibly effective.
Try:
5–10 minutes: Warm up
25–30 minutes: Strength training
- Leg press or squats
- Lat pulldown or a row
- Chest press
- Hip thrust or another lower-body exercise
- A simple core exercise
5–10 minutes: Cardio or cool down
That's it.
And if you're not sure what to do, ask.
One of the best things you can do when you're new to the gym, or simply bored with your current routine, is to get some guidance and try something different.
Try something new this October
If you've been doing the same workout for months, perhaps October is the time to mix things up.
Try a class. Train with a friend. Pick up some weights. Try a piece of equipment you've never used.
Book a PT session. Change your programme.
You might discover that the thing you've been avoiding is actually the thing you really enjoy.
And if you've fallen out of love with your current routine, that's okay too. Fitness shouldn't feel like punishment.
You should be able to find forms of movement that make you feel stronger, happier and more capable.
Don't let the darker evenings stop you
There is something lovely about summer training, heading outside in the sunshine, going for a coastal walk, cycling, swimming or simply being more active because the days are longer.
But autumn doesn't mean you have to stop moving. It just means your routine might need to change. And let's be honest, there are some October evenings when the last thing you want to do is head outside into the rain!
That's where having a gym you enjoy being in can make a difference.
At MDL, you've got 24-hour access, plenty of natural light and those marina and harbour views, so even when it's grey outside, your workout doesn't have to feel quite so gloomy.
Don't wait until January
Perhaps the biggest mistake you can make this October is telling yourself:
"I'll start properly in January."
Why wait? Imagine what you could achieve between now and the New Year if you simply started building a consistent routine now.
You could become stronger.
You could improve your fitness.
You could learn how to use the weights area confidently.
You could establish a couple of regular gym sessions each week.
You could discover a class you love.
You could simply feel better in yourself.
And when January arrives, you won't be starting from scratch.
You'll already have built something.
Your October challenge
So, here's your challenge from us at MDL Fitness:
3 x 4
For the next four weeks, aim to move three times a week.
That's it. It doesn't have to mean three hard gym sessions.
It could be:
2 gym sessions + 1 walk
1 strength session + 2 classes
3 shorter gym sessions
1 PT session + 2 independent workouts
The goal isn't perfection. The goal is simply to show up. Sometimes the biggest change isn't what happens during one individual workout. It's what happens when you keep turning up week after week.

October doesn't have to be the beginning of the winter slump
As a Fitness Manager, one of the things I love most about working in a gym is seeing what happens when people stop waiting for the "perfect" time to start and simply begin making movement part of their lives.
October doesn't need to be the month your motivation disappears. It can be the month you build something that lasts.
So don't wait for January. Don't wait for Monday. And don't worry about having the perfect workout.
Just get through the doors. We'll see you there.
Ready to make October your month?
