MDL staff’s good deeds to help the community
People from every community, locally and globally, are coming together to help others during the ongoing pandemic.
Some of our wonderful staff have also been doing their bit, carrying out good deeds in their local area.
Paul Orman, Dock Master at our Shamrock Quay Marina, signed up to be an NHS Volunteer on the GoodSAM website.Helping to collect much needed shopping, vital medication and other essential supplies for those in self-isolation, Paul is supporting the NHS and other key workers so they can continue to provide much needed medical care.
Paul and his fiancée, Donna who works as a nurse at a care home, are also looking after various friends and relatives who are unable to get out and about due to their age or state of health. This selfless activity is being carried out on his days off, the remainder of the time he’s still down at the marina, taking care of our berth holders boats, making sure everything is safe and secure.
Andrew Millar, Brixham Marina Manager, is also going the extra mile. Andrew is a member of the Torbay Hospital Radio team that broadcasts to staff, patients and visitors 24 hours a day.
Not currently being able to travel, Andrew and the team have managed to obtain equipment, at personal expense, that will allow them to continue to broadcast from home.
“I have taken to broadcasting from my garden and the listeners often get treated to the sounds of pheasants and woodpeckers in the background,” says Andrew.
Broadcasting remotely enables them to comfort families at Torbay Hospital as much as possible during an extremely difficult time, playing special songs and dedications.
“We send out lots of virtual hugs to people who can’t be with their families,” continues Andrew. “Now we’re available online we can relay messages and play dedications for people who can’t physically be together, keeping loved ones connected.”
We are extremely proud of our MDL staff and the wider MDL family and the way that everyone is pulling together for the benefit of those around them.
