Making fitness fit family life this summer

School's out... but your wellbeing doesn't have to be

Summer holidays are full of wonderful memories, days at the beach, ice creams, camping trips, family adventures and those slower mornings we all crave. But they can also mean routines disappear, gym visits become less frequent, and by the end of August many parents feel like they've completely fallen off track (and gained a few grey hairs).

If that sounds familiar, here's some good news...

You don't need a perfect routine to stay healthy. You simply need to keep moving.

As both a Fitness Manager and Positive Psychology Coach, one of the biggest mindset shifts I encourage is this:

Stop asking, "How do I fit exercise into my day?" and start asking, "How can movement become part of my day?"

That one question changes everything.

Exercise Doesn't Have to Mean the Gym

During the school holidays, life is unpredictable. Children wake up at different times, days are packed with activities, and finding an uninterrupted hour can feel impossible.

Rather than seeing this as a barrier, see it as an opportunity to redefine what being active looks like.

Movement is movement.

Whether it's a gym session, a family walk, playing football in the park or dancing around the kitchen while dinner cooks, it all counts.

The healthiest families aren't necessarily the ones who exercise the most.

They're the ones who move often.

Make Your Children Your Workout Partners

Children are naturally active. Instead of viewing them as the reason you can't exercise, let them become the reason you do.

Some simple ideas include:

  • Family bike rides along the coast or local trails.
  • Nature treasure hunts with younger children.
  • Swimming together at your local pool or beach.
  • Park circuits while the children play.
  • Family football, frisbee or rounders.
  • Evening walks after dinner.
  • Paddleboarding, kayaking or rock pooling if you're lucky enough to live by the coast.
  • Dance competitions in the living room on rainy days.

Children don't remember how many calories they burned.

They remember having fun with you.

And that's where lifelong healthy habits begin.

Forget "All or Nothing"

One of the biggest mistakes people make is believing a workout only counts if it's an hour long.

Research consistently shows that small bursts of activity throughout the day can have enormous benefits for both physical and mental health.

Ten minutes here.

Fifteen minutes there.

Three walks.

A quick stretch.

Playing tag with the kids.

It all adds up.

The Positive Psychology Perspective

Positive psychology teaches us that wellbeing isn't about waiting until life becomes less busy.

It's about finding ways to flourish within the life you already have.

Instead of focusing on what you're missing this summer, ask yourself:

  • What movement brings me joy?
  • How can I create one active memory with my family today?
  • What small action would make me feel proud this evening?

These questions shift your attention away from guilt and towards possibility.
That's where motivation grows.

Give Yourself Permission to Do Less

Here's something many parents need to hear:

You don't have to train five days a week to maintain your health.

During busy seasons, maintaining is a success.

If you normally exercise five times a week but only manage two during the holidays, that isn't failure.

That's life.

Your routine will still be there in September.

The goal is simply not to stop altogether.

Looking Ahead to September

As school routines return, so can yours.

September often feels like a second New Year, a fresh start, new routines and renewed motivation.

If you've stayed active in small ways over the summer, returning to the gym will feel much easier than starting again from scratch.

At MDL Fitness, we love helping members build routines that fit REAL life, not perfect life.

Whether you're returning after a summer break, starting your fitness journey for the first time, or simply looking for support and encouragement, we're here to help.

Your August Challenge

This month, don't aim for perfection.

Aim for movement.

Try to do one active thing every day with your family, even if it's only for 20 minutes.

Walk.

Laugh.

Play.

Explore.

Because the memories you create together will last far longer than any missed workout.

And remember...

An active family doesn't have to be a sporty family. It just needs to be a family that enjoys moving together.

We'll be here when you're ready to get back into your gym routine, but until then, enjoy every adventure August has to offer.
