Don’t wait until January: What could you achieve in 16 weeks?

Summer is over and this can leave people feeling sad, deflated and unmotivated. We’ve been outdoors for the last four months, powered by sunshine and ice cream. Days spent splashing in the sea, running the coast paths, cycling the streets, paddleboarding, rowing and more!

September sees the outdoor activities start to dwindle with the change in the weather. The unpredictability of autumn weather, the cold, rain and wind mean we start spending more time inside. We go to work, we go home, and we find it harder to motivate ourselves to go to the gym. It becomes a challenge, a chore, because instead of going to the gym on the way to or from work, we stay in bed a little longer, savouring the warmth, or drive straight home to snuggle up with a blanket.

As cosy as that sounds, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are simple ways to ensure you stay on track as the season changes and go into the BER months feeling motivated, strong and energised.

And here’s the thing: you don’t have to wait until January.

If you started in September and trained consistently for the next 16 weeks, imagine where you could be by Christmas. You could have built strength, improved your fitness, created healthy habits, increased your confidence and made exercise part of your routine rather than something you start and stop every few months.

So, how do we stay motivated when the weather turns?

Fitness to Fit

Your training schedule must fit into your routine for it to become a habit. There is no point saying you will go to the gym at lunchtime if this simply isn’t realistic.

Spend five minutes on a Sunday evening planning where your schedule allows you to add in movement. It doesn’t have to be an hour, but it does have to fit your schedule.

Can you go to the gym before work? Is it easier on some days to do Pilates or yoga at home? Can you fit a 30-minute HIIT session into your lunch break? Could you book a class straight after work so you have somewhere to be rather than heading home?

The best exercise routine is the one you can stick to.

Start small. Two or three consistent sessions every week will always beat one huge session followed by two weeks of doing nothing.

Fitness Should Be Fun

If you are not excited about the movement you’re doing, you simply won’t do it.

Exercise can, and should, be enjoyable.

Instead of going by yourself, ask a friend to join you or try a class. The gym or studio can be a great place to socialise, meet new people and become part of a community.

And remember, exercise doesn’t have to look a certain way. You don’t have to spend an hour on a treadmill if you hate running. Try strength training, a fitness class, swimming, cycling, Pilates, dancing or anything else that gets you moving.

Find something you enjoy and you’ll be much more likely to keep doing it.

Fitness and Food

The autumn months mean a change in what we eat. Food becomes comfort: soups, stews, pies, roast dinners… and if you weren’t hungry before, you probably are now!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying these foods. In fact, autumn is a great time to embrace warming, nourishing meals.

The key is balance.

A diet built around a variety of nutrient-dense foods — fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, protein, fibre and carbohydrates — can help support your energy levels and keep you feeling fuller and satisfied throughout the day.

Rather than restricting yourself because Christmas is coming, focus on adding good things in.

Add protein to your breakfast. Add vegetables to your lunch. Keep fruit available for snacks. Drink plenty of water. Build meals that leave you feeling energised rather than sluggish.

And yes, enjoy the roast dinner.

Healthy eating doesn't mean giving up the foods you love. It means creating a balance that works for you.

Set a Goal That Isn’t About the Scales

September is a great time to set a goal, but your goal doesn't have to be about losing weight.

What would you love to be able to do by Christmas?

Perhaps you want to:

  • Complete your first 5K.
  • Lift a heavier weight.
  • Improve your fitness.
  • Do your first full push-up.
  • Feel stronger.
  • Improve your mobility.
  • Attend the gym three times a week.
  • Feel more confident in your clothes.
  • Have more energy.
  • Simply make exercise a regular part of your life.

A goal gives your training purpose, but remember to celebrate the smaller wins along the way.

The first time you increase a weight. The class you nearly didn't attend but went to anyway. The extra repetition. The day you choose the gym when you would rather stay on the sofa.

Those are all wins.

Give Yourself 16 Weeks

This is where September gets exciting.

Sixteen weeks is enough time to create genuine change.

Not a crash diet. Not a two-week fitness challenge. Not an unsustainable January resolution.

Sixteen weeks of consistency.

Imagine walking into Christmas knowing that you have spent the last four months investing in yourself.

You might be stronger. You might be fitter. You might have more energy. You might have discovered a new class you love. You might have made new friends. You might simply feel proud that you kept a promise to yourself.

And when January arrives, you won't be starting again.

You'll already be doing it.

So, as summer comes to an end and the evenings start getting darker, don't see September as the beginning of the countdown to Christmas.

See it as an opportunity.

Reset your routine. Refocus your goals. Rebuild your habits.

Don't wait for January to become the person you want to be.

Start now. Give yourself 16 weeks and see what you can achieve.
