Antifouling Explained: Expert Advice from Ancasta Yacht Services

Tom Thorne from Ancasta Yacht Services talks through the essentials of antifouling and why it is such an important part of boat maintenance. He explains how keeping your hull properly antifouled helps extend the life of your boat, prevents weed growth that can clog bow thrusters, and reduces drag that would otherwise harm fuel efficiency.

Tom also covers the key preparation work needed before applying antifoul. From ensuring the hull surface is ready, to wearing the correct protective gear such as overalls, a face mask, goggles and gloves. He highlights the tools required, including a sander, hoover and grip disc, and the importance of taping waterlines, shafts, engines and skin fittings. The video explores the different types of antifoul, noting that motorboats typically use harder formulations than sailing boats, and why applying two coats is generally recommended.
