MDL Marinas is proud to announce its involvement with Marwell Wildlife’s public art extravaganza, Marwell’s Zany Zebras. For 10 weeks during the summer of 2016, a dazzling herd of Marwell’s Zany Zebra sculptures will be seen around Southampton, creating a fun, family friendly trail for all to enjoy.
As well as showcasing local art, promoting local businesses and encouraging local tourism, Marwell’s Zany Zebras will also raise money for charity. After the event, all of the sculptures will be sold at auction with proceeds going towards Marwell Wildlife’s work to conserve endangered Grevy’s zebras and other wildlife, and to support communities living in the arid rangelands of northern Kenya.
Adrien Burnand, Head of Marketing at MDL, said: “We are delighted to be a part of Marwell's Zany Zebras campaign. We think it’s a fantastic way of raising awareness of the work that Marwell Wildlife is doing to protect endangered Grevy’s zebra and to support communities in Africa. We are really looking forward to meeting our zebra and we are sure he will look fantastic! MDL has six marinas in Southampton which play an integral part in the life of the city. Initiatives like these are a brilliant way to bring local people and businesses together and we are very excited to be involved.”
Kirstie Mathieson, Project Manager for Marwell’s Zany Zebras, said: “Marwell’s Zany Zebras will showcase Southampton and all the city has to offer, including our beautiful marinas. Art trails of this nature provide a great vehicle for tourists and residents to discover pockets of the city that perhaps they would never have had reason to visit before. We are thrilled that MDL Marinas is taking part in this unique and creative opportunity.”

This weekend, staff at Ocean Village Marina in Southampton will be welcoming 125 sailors into the marina for South Coast Blind Week 2015 (27th June– 4th July), a major UK event offering amazing sailing opportunities for people with visual impairments.
Every second year, the marina provides participating yachts with berths – hosting them free of charge in support of the week. The event gives a crew of 50 people with visual impairments the opportunity to enjoy a cruise along the South Coast, with the help of 50 sighted crew and 25 skippers. Participants range from complete novices who are sailing for the first time to world champions in disability sports.
South Coast Blind Week allows people with visual impairments to quickly learn safety measures, boat handling and rope work, helping to develop risk awareness and confidence moving around a yacht at sea. Participants also learn how to use special audio compasses to help them steer their course.
Event Organiser, Will Bridge, commented: “To make Blind Week a success, we depend upon safe, welcoming, and convenient marinas. MDL’s Ocean Village Marina and all the staff generously provide us with the facilities we need in style. As well as allowing participants to learn some really valuable skills, the week offers fantastic social opportunities when the boats anchor up together for the night. It looks to be a great week.”
Debbie Burns, Manager at Ocean Village Marina, said: “We are very excited to be hosting the yachts for South Coast Blind Week and really look forward to meeting the participants. It is always a real honour to be involved.”

A group of cycling enthusiasts and British Heart Foundation supporters are celebrating after raising an incredible £10,000 during a mammoth 68-mile cycle ride from Penton Hook Marina, near Chertsey-on-Thames, to Ocean Village Marina in Southampton.
The bike ride took place on Saturday (6th June) and was organised by MDL berth holder, Gary Pearson, with the support of fellow cycling enthusiast, Paul Markwick, and the MDL team. Ahead of the ride, staff at Penton Hook Marina ensured the cyclists were ready for action, serving up bacon sandwiches and providing them with energy bars and drinks.
68 miles and around seven hours later, the cyclists crossed the finish line and were met by MDL staff, berth holders and supporters with cheers and applause. The MDL team at Ocean Village Marina set up banners supplied by Artisan Signs and balloons to welcome the cyclists and held a barbeque in celebration, giving participants the chance to socialise together and to refuel and relax after a day’s cycling.
A team from MDL Marinas took part in the challenge. The cyclists were Dean Smith, Mike Glanville, Shaw Smith, Jonathan Walcroft, Clive Marriott and Ben Boardman, who put in many training miles ahead of the ride. Members of the Yachting and Boating World forum and a number of MDL’s berth holders also took part in the event, with friends and family heading down to the marina to cheer them across the finish line.
Dean Smith, Marketing and Operations Director at MDL Marinas, commented: “We were delighted to host the ride at two of our marinas as this is a cause that we know is very close to Gary’s heart. The ride itself was hard going in places but crossing the finish line was an amazing feeling that made it all worthwhile. The staff did a great job putting on refreshments at both Penton Hook and Ocean Village Marina, making it a really sociable and fun event.”
Gary Pearson, MDL berth holder and organiser of the event said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to my fellow cyclists and our supporters, as well as the staff at MDL for their hard work and the Royal Southampton Yacht Club for hosting the evening celebrations, all of which helped in making the day such a big success. After experiencing the fantastic care and support offered by the British Heart Foundation first-hand, it’s brilliant to be giving something back. The final amount raised is double our fundraising target of £5,000 and we’d like to thank all those who donated so generously.”

Staff at Ocean Village Marina in Southampton are looking forward to welcoming some very special visitors into the marina at the end of the month, ahead of the prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron International Bicentenary Regatta (25th – 31st July).
All four of the J Class yachts competing in the Regatta will berth at the marina - Rainbow, Ranger, Velsheda and Lionheart - along with Bystander, an impressive 42.1m vessel built as an escort for Velsheda. The yachts will be joining vessels from 25 UK sailing clubs as they take part in a number of challenging races to celebrate the 200-year history of the Royal Yacht Squadron.
The J Class will race as a fleet, with exciting 2-3 hour courses in and beyond the Solent. Spectators and fans of the J Class will be able to view the grace and power of these elegant vessels from a number of vantage points around the Solent, as well as at Ocean Village Marina itself.
Debbie Burns, Manager at Ocean Village Marina, said: “We are excited and extremely proud to host these four magnificent yachts at the marina. Our deep waters and central location make Ocean Village the ideal location for these beautiful boats and we are highly experienced at catering for larger yachts. We were lucky to host three of the boats in 2012 for the J Class Solent Regatta and are thrilled that the boats will be returning.”
The J Class is a single masted racing sailboat that has its roots in the oldest sporting race in the world, The America’s Cup. The four J Class yachts that will be berthed at Ocean Village vary in length from the 39-metre Rainbow to the 43.7-metre Lionheart. The vessels will be arriving at Ocean Village Marina from the J Class Regatta in Falmouth.
All Ocean Village berth holders are invited to take part in a jolly to the Folly Inn (on the Isle of Wight) on Saturday 20th June. Overnight berths are booked from 6.30pm with tables booked for 8pm. There will be a Caribbean theme with prizes for the best dressed boats and individuals.
If you wish to reserve your space please contact Jonathan Wait (F/G walkway) or Barry Phillips on F23.
