IT’S TIME TO WINTERISE It may seem odd with the sun not long gone down at the end of a fantastic summer of boating, but it’s time to think about winter servicing and winterisation. Winter service is essential to the long term health of a marine engine no matter what size or type or how much use it has had. During use the oil absorbs contaminants and condensation from the combustion process and the harsh environment in which it operates. This contaminated oil should be removed and replaced with fresh clean marine grade lubricating oil and the best time to do this is before the winter layup. Leaving contaminated oil in the engine over the winter will lead to greater wear and tear and reduced engine life. Combining an end of season service with winterisation is the best care you can give your engine to maintain your investment. Arranging your winter service and winterisation now takes away the worry and sleepless nights when the weather forecasters predict a sudden cold snap. If you also book your recommissioning at the same time you can be sure your boat is up and running when you want it at the start on next season. For bookings received before the end of November 2104 we are offering 10% discount on parts used. So whether you have an outboard motor, a yacht auxiliary or a pair of high performance diesel engines it is time to get your winter maintenance booked. And don’t forget the generator if you have one fitted, they need the same maintenance as a propulsion engine.

MDL Supports the Hamble Big Boat Championships as Lead Sponsor

Posted: 2nd October 2014

The MDL Hamble Big Boat Championships 2014 will run on Saturday 11th/Sunday 12th October and Saturday 24th/Sunday 25th October.

The event, held across two weekends when there is high water on the central Solent plateau, is renowned for close, competitive racing.  It regularly attracts a top grand prix race fleet from across the Solent, all seeking an exhilarating end to the season.

The MDL Big Boat Championships offer 4 races each Saturday and 2 each Sunday.  Racing, under the experienced eye of Race Officers Jamie Wilkinson and Stephen Parry, is offered for Farr 45 and J/111 as one design and IRC rated boats with a minimum TCC of 1.040. Other One Design Classes with a minimum IRC TCC of 1.040 that can muster a minimum of six entries may also apply for a class start. Please contact HRSC to discuss.

Dean Smith, Operations and Marketing Director, MDL said: “MDL Marinas is delighted to be the lead sponsor for this year’s Hamble Big Boat Championships. The series is a natural fit with MDL – being based just offshore from our Hamble Point Marina and involving much of the local community. MDL Marinas works hard to encourage young people to become active in sailing, working with the Ocean Youth Trust South to give deserving young people the chance to participate in the sport, so it’s great to be involved in another fantastic sailing event. We’re all looking forward to some great racing action over the coming weeks.”

The MDL Big Boat Championships are celebrating their 8th edition this year and have grown over the years to become a key component of the Garmin Hamble Winter Series. Prize giving is at 3.30pm each Sunday race day at Hamble River Sailing Club, which offers a warm welcome, hot food and competitively priced beer!

PSP Southampton Boat Show Highlights

Posted: 25th September 2014

It was great to welcome so many berth holders and visitors to our stand at the PSP Southampton Boat Show. We hope you had a fantastic time and enjoyed our hospitality, and we look forward to seeing you at our marinas very soon.

It was certainly an action packed 10 days, where we welcomed over 4,500 visitors to our stand, served just under 7,000 drinks (many of them containing alcohol!), and we hosted a number of great events, all in the lovely September sunshine.

Here’s a quick snapshot of some of the highlights of the show...

  • We raised over £2,000 for Ocean Youth Trust South, which will go towards the brilliant work they do and their initiative to raise money for a new boat – thank you to those of you who made additional donations at the bar!
  • We welcomed five young people to our stand who were presented with their MDL Sail Training Awards by Lord Iliffe, Chairman of MDL’s parent company. The awards, which have been running for over 20 years, offer admirable young people - carefully selected due to their exceptional accomplishments, or for overcoming adverse personal circumstances – the opportunity of a lifetime aboard the training yacht. The five deserving young people returned from a trip at sea for six days in April this year in and around our marinas.
  • Dave Wilson, AKA “Dogfish Dave” presented a cheque to Heroes on the Water for £637.20 following the fantastic annual fishing competition at Cobb’s Quay earlier this year.
  • We LOVED all of your Selfies... and taking a few of our own... thanks to all of you who got involved in the campaign!
  • We presented the winners of our annual photo competition, with MDL’s Photographer of the Year being presented to Neil O’Donoghue, who took a stunning landscape picture at Torquay Marina and will receive a one-day photographic shoot and tuition session with Brendan Fitzgerald of Fitz Marine Photography. The winning image in the under-16s competition was captured at Brixham Marina – a beautiful sunset taken by Dan Parrish. Dan received the brand new Nikon COOLPIX AW120 digital camera.
  • We rewarded our green fingered marinas as part of MDL in Bloom with Saxon Wharf in Southampton sweeping the board, scooping the ‘X’ Factor title, best hanging baskets and the coveted best overall award thanks to a hanging boat from a hoist which was the deciding factor that put the marina in the top running.
  • On Friday 19th September our international team hosted an ‘Italian Day’, with boat owners given the chance to uncover the many advantages of berthing and visiting our Italian Marinas – two exciting new additions to our Mediterranean network – Marinara in Ravenna and Marina di Stabia in the Bay of Naples.
  • We received a fantastic response to Freedom Berthing and lots of enquiries to berth at our marinas next season – we look forward to welcoming you, our valued berth holders, as well as seeing some new faces over the coming months.

We hope you enjoy the rest of the season and we look forward to seeing you over the coming months. Just a quick reminder we will also be at the London Boat Show from Friday 9th January and hope to see many of you there too!

Happy Boating from all the team at MDL.

Young People Rewarded at MDL Sail Training Awards

Posted: 17th September 2014

Six deserving young people who won a place on this year’s MDL Sail Training Awards voyage were officially presented with their trophies yesterday at the PSP Southampton Boat Show by Lord Iliffe, Chairman of MDL’s parent company. The youngsters returned from their trip earlier this year after spending six days at sea with the Ocean Youth Trust South.

The MDL-sponsored awards, which have been running for over 20 years, offer admirable young people - carefully selected due to their exceptional accomplishments, or for overcoming adverse personal circumstances – the opportunity of a lifetime aboard the training yacht.

Joining a team on board the ketch John Laing were Callum Archibald, 14 from Basingstoke, 13-year-old John Bratherton, from Fordingbridge, Erin Sutton, 14, and Jodie Beckham, 13, both from Totton, Oscar Perkins, 13, from Brixham and 15-year-old Robert Jelley from Romsey.
The week-long round trip, from Ocean Village Marina in Southampton, saw them plotting their intended course and getting involved with all elements of sailing. During the voyage the participants also had the opportunity to obtain the Competent Crew certificate, an RYA recognised qualification.

Eamonn Feeney, Managing Director at MDL Marinas, commented: “Our Sail Training Awards are a very important initiative for us and we have so far helped well over a hundred young people to experience something truly exceptional. We are big supporters of the work of Ocean Youth Trust South and it’s fantastic that they can reward these youngsters with such a brilliant adventure that really does give them skills for life. We look forward to meeting this year’s winners and presenting them with their awards.”

2014 MDL Photo Competition Winners Announced

Posted: 12th September 2014

MDL Marinas is delighted to announce the winners of its 2014 Photographer of the Year competitions, with the winning images taking pride of place on MDL’s Waterside Pavilion (E52) at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show.

Open to amateur and professional photographers, this year the popular competition featured both the main Photographer of the Year contest alongside an under-16s category. Entrants were judged by a panel that included professional photographer Brendan Fitzgerald of Fitz Marine Photography.

MDL’s Photographer of the Year was Neil O’Donoghue who took a stunning landscape picture at Torquay Marina (above) and will receive a one-day photographic shoot and tuition session with Brendan Fitzgerald of Fitz Marine Photography. The winning image in the under-16s competition was captured at Brixham Marina – a beautiful sunset taken by Dan Parrish. Dan will receive the brand new Nikon COOLPIX AW120 digital camera – which is waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof.

Also attending will be Matthew Harvey, a berth holder at Penton Hook Marina who took runner up spot in the main competition. He will receive a magnum of Champagne for his highly atmospheric shot of the marina. The runner up in the under-16s was Hannah Weeks whose family has a boat in dry stack at Hamble Point Marina. Hannah shot a beautiful early evening scene and will be rewarded with £50 worth of Amazon vouchers. In addition, all winners and runners-up will receive a pair of tickets to the PSP Southampton Boat Show to see their photos displayed on MDL’s waterfront stand (E52). The official prize presentation will take place on Wednesday 17th September at 3pm.

Brendan Fitzgerald of Fitz Marine Photography, commented: “What an absolute privilege to judge this year's MDL Photographer of the Year competition. The two category winners were both strong landscape images. I love the winning image in the under-16s category, it reminds me of a feeling we've all had when we feel we're the only people up at sunrise and heading out for a fun day on the water - bliss. The overall winner, Neil O’Donoghue, provided a very striking image. I love the reflections on the water in the foreground leading the viewer’s eye onto the marina and nearly apocalyptic skyline overhead - this would make a great print or canvas blown up. Congratulations to both winners and well done to all of this year’s entrants, great work.”

Alongside this year’s competition, MDL also ran a staff photo contest for the fifth year. The winning photograph was taken by Penton Hook Marina’s David Whisson for his beautiful picture of swans on the water in the early morning. Claire Blades from Saxon Wharf was the runner up for her picture looking out across the River Itchen from the marina in the sunshine. David will also receive a Nikon COOLPIX AW120 digital camera and Claire can toast her success with a magnum of Champagne.
