MDL Scoops Top Environmental Award

Posted: 9th December 2012

We are proud to have scooped two prestigious environmental awards this autumn. Practical Boat Owner magazine awarded us its 2012 Green Award in the ‘Best Service’ category, and Hythe Marina Village received special recognition from environmental campaign The Green Blue.

Practical Boat Owner Editor, Sarah Norbury presented the MDL team with the 2012 Green Award in the ‘Best Service’ category award, in recognition of MDL’s work in reducing the environmental impact of our marinas. Our programme has included installing solar panels for water heating and electricity generation, switching to low energy LED lights at some sites, marking surface water drains and recycling our waste oil into heating fuel.

Hythe Marina Village was also recognised by environmental campaign The Green Blue. Hythe Manager Adrian Gilson was presented with his award for outstanding work in raising environmental awareness amongst his berth holders, including a free give-away of green goodies supported by the Environment Agency. Any visitors to Hythe Marina Village may still claim a free bottle of Ecover from the Marina Office!

In addition to these awards, we’ve also teamed up with a team of clever recyclers called Battery Back to provide desktop battery recycling tubs in all our marina offices. You can also use the tubs to recycle the multitude of small batteries used on board. The marina offices accept all types of small domestic-type batteries such as alkaline, zinc-carbon, NiCd and LiH, so just bring them up the next time you visit. Once full, the tubs are taken to the recycling plant, where the batteries are crushed and separated into their constituent metals such as steel, zinc, brass and manganese, ready for re-use. Keeping these potentially polluting items out of landfill must be a good thing, so come on and do your bit!  We also accept your lead acid batteries for recycling. We just ask that you don’t put domestic type batteries in the large lead acid battery boxes please.

Winter Workshops - Marine Diesel Engines

Posted: 23rd October 2012

In association with the RYA, Stormforce Coaching are offering MDL's Southampton based berth holders (Shamrock Quay, Saxon Wharf, Hythe Marina Village and Ocean Village Marina) the chance to enjoy some hands-on tuition with their Winterisation Workshop on Saturday November 24th 2012.

As yachts are lifted for winter, many owners will winterise their boat’s engine to ensure it survives the cold temperatures and starts first time next season. The practical workshop will be full of top tips, whatever your engine type. Those taking part will spend 2 hours with an experienced instructor for just £20 at Stormfoce's training centre in Shamrock Quay. Spaces are limited, so it is advisable to book now to guarantee your place.

If you would like to spend some time in the warmth of the classroom this winter, you might also enjoy the winter seminars that Stormforce are holding: Weather for Yachtsmen (9th February) and How to get the best from your Radar (23rd February).

Hythe Marina Village Wins Sustainabilty Award

Posted: 30th September 2012

Hythe Marina Village is proud to announce that it has won a sustainability award from marine environmental group The Green Blue.

The marina was nominated for the award following its efforts to support and promote The Green Blue’s environmental awareness campaign for the boating community. The marina distributed free packs of environmental goodies to its berth holders, encouraging boaters to make quick practical changes onboard to help reduce their impact on coastal and inland waters.

Adrian Gilson, Marina Manager at Hythe Marina Village, commented: “We are very proud to have received this award from The Green Blue. Our staff have worked tirelessly to help raise awareness of important environmental issues amongst out berth holders, so it’s great to see their efforts recognised.”

The Green Blue is an innovative environmental awareness programme set up by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. The programme promotes the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by boating and watersports participants, as well as the sustainable operation and development of the recreational boating industry.

MDL Marinas, is proud to announce its prestigious win in this year’s Practical Boat Owner Green Awards. The marina network received the award for ‘Best Marine Service and Support’ in recognition of its efforts in reducing the environmental impact of its 21 marinas and boatyards.

MDL worked hard to implement a range of measures to promote marine-industry sustainability and achieve its outstanding eco-credentials. Dean Smith, Marketing Director at MDL Marinas, commented: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious award and to be recognised for our efforts in reducing our environmental impact.”

Anna Wyse, MDL’s dedicated Environmental Policy Manager, commented: “The beautiful locations of our marinas deserve special consideration if we are to enjoy them in years to come and we have invested considerable time and energy into putting our environmental practices in place. MDL recognises that virtually all the activities of the company, and that of our customers and tenants, have some impact on the environment.

“All of MDL’s marinas are subject to environmental audits on a periodic basis and the company continues to invest in resources to educate berth holders and staff.”

MDL received its Green Award at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show. The PBO Green Award for ‘Best Marine Service and Support’ was presented to Anna Wyse, and to MDL’s Managing Director, Eamonn Feeney and Chief Operating Officer, Jon Eads by Sarah Norbury, Editor of Practical Boat Owner.

Active Marina at PSP Southampton Boat Show

Posted: 6th September 2012

Many Club Outlook members will already be familiar with the RYA’s Active Marina Programme, as successful workshops have been held at many MDL marinas across the summer season.

Visitors to this month’s PSP Southampton Boat Show will also have the chance to try out a sample of the workshops for themselves, as part of a brand new event at the show.

The Active Marina Experience offers show-goers the opportunity to refresh their boating skills and gain top tips from expert instructors with free on-the-water and shore-based workshops.

From man overboard drills and berthing manoeuvres to engine maintenance and radar operation, workshops will run daily throughout the show, providing a real hands-on experience.

Places are limited for the workshops, so it’s recommended that sessions are booked either in advance for the shore-based workshops, or on the day for the on-the-water sessions.

To book an on-the-water workshop visit the ‘Try-a-Boat’ booking point on stand A140, when you arrive at the show.  (Unfortunately, on-the-water workshops cannot be booked in advance)

Shore-based workshops can be booked in advance by emailing bookings@which-marina.com, calling 01784 223816 or by visiting the Which Marina stand (F004) at the show.

For further information and a workshop schedule visit the RYA website.

Snap Happy with MDL - Photo Winners Announced

Posted: 4th September 2012

Entries flooded in this summer for MDL’s annual photo competition, which for the first time this year included an under-16s category, alongside the coveted best photograph.

Berth holders, visitors and members of the local community from across the marina network submitted photographs that captured time spent in and around our marinas in the UK and Europe, including fast-paced action shots and footage out on the water, as well as some stunning landscape shots.

Hugely impressed with the quality of entries this year, judges were looking for entries that have succeeded in capturing in images what really makes each of MDL’s 21 marinas a truly unique destination – through the eyes of people who experience the marinas for themselves.

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2012 photography competition is David Thomas, with a winning image capturing a stunning sunset over Brixham Marina.

As this year’s winner, David will receive a Nikon Coolpix L810 camera, plus a workshop session with leading studio photographers at PhotoRed Commercial Photography, based at MDL’s Shamrock Quay. He will also be treated to a bottle of Champagne and tickets to the PSP Southampton Boat Show – where he will see his winning image displayed on MDL’s two-tier waterside pavilion.

Second place in the main competition, winning £100 worth of vouchers to use at London Camera Exchange, is awarded to Martin Makinen from Newton Abbott, for his beautiful shot of the sun breaking through the clouds at Holden Pier near to Brixham Marina.

For the first time, this year’s competition included a dedicated category for young photographers, with first prize in the under-16s competition going to Sophie Tuffier from Cherbourg. Sophie’s parents are Cruising Club members and were visiting Brixham Marina, where she snapped her winning shot of a beautiful sunny day in the water. Sophie will be presented with a Nikon Coolpix S30 underwater camera to help her continue her photographic endeavours.

Coming a close second in the under-16s category is 12–year-old Christopher Broughton, whose shot of sunset over Shamrock Quay has won him £50 to spend at London Camera Exchange.

All the winners will also receive tickets to the PSP Southampton Boat Show, where they will be presented with their prizes at the MDL stand (E52) on Wednesday 19th September at 2pm.

All 7 of the P&O Cruises Fleet Together in Southampton

Posted: 29th June 2012

P&O's story began in 1837 when the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company was awarded the British Government contract for a weekly mail service to the Iberian Peninsula. In celebration of this exciting anniversary, all seven ships of the P&O Cruises fleet will be together in their home port of Southampton on the same day, 3rd July 2012.

This will be a first in the history of the company and we are delighted that Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal, is joining us for what promises to be a grand event. The ships with their gleaming white hulls and signature "buff" funnels will be alongside at seven different points in the port of Southampton.

Leaving their berths on this historic day, the ship's passengers and crew will enjoy a champagne deck party as the flutterfetti flies; the marching band plays and the ships sail past in a procession from Southampton Water out into the Solent, accompanied by a display by the famous RAF Red Arrows aerobatic team. Out in the open water the ships will meet again, saluting one another before they sail onwards to their various exciting destinations.

Green Blue Give-Away

Posted: 28th June 2012

Bertholders at Hythe Marina Village are to benefit from a free pack of environmental goodies, courtesy of The Green Blue and the Environment Agency. MDL is co-ordinating distribution of the products as part of its support for the BMF/RYA environmental initiative.

The Green Blue’s aim is to change boaters’ behaviour, recognising what actions can pollute the aquatic environment. The Green Blue's Jane Swan has put together a clever pack of products that help in areas where boaters can make quick practical changes: bilge socks to soak up oil in bilge water and cigarette butt pouches for the remaining smokers amongst us. Of course, Ecover also features, its phosphate-free formula being kinder to aquatic life.

Hythe Manager Adrian Gilson said ‘Packs will be available from the fuel berth over the summer. Just ask a member of the MDL team’.

You can also find out more about MDL’s environmental programme by visiting this page or by contacting our Environmental Manager, Anna Wyse. Of course, Customer Comment Cards are always available from the Marina Office if you want to let us know what you think.
