If you are in the market for a new boat or just a keen boating fan, there’s one event not to be missed this weekend, Hamble Point Boats on Show. Taking place this weekend, on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th May, visitors can tour over 250 new and used boats at the South’s premier boating location, with free entrance and parking.
Visitors will have access to a huge range of sail, day boats, sports boats, cruisers and RIBs from some of Europe’s leading marine brands. The marina is also home to top yacht brokers, boat dealers, builders, refit specialists, riggers and engineers, with over 50 marine companies on-site. Whilst there, visitors can treat themselves to lunch and drinks at the Ketch Rigger Bar and Restaurant, and enjoy the beautiful sunshine forecasted for the weekend.
At the show, Sunbird International Motor Yachts will be showcasing its Monte Carlo MC5. This boat is multi-award winning, and is the only current model for sale in the UK. The team will be on hand to talk through the entire range which starts from 45ft through to the all-new 105ft MCY105. The SBS will be debuting the WRIB GT375 in the UK, the first of a new range of standard non-folding RIBs from the same company that makes FRIBs. They will also have the Island RIBs 7.5m, which is powered by a 200hp Suzuki engine, as well as the full range of FRIBs and a selection of DinghyGo inflatable sailing dinghies and Aquaglide inflatable kayaks.
Key Yachting will also be debuting three of their new models, the 3 cabin Nautitech Open 40 featuring the new standard light oak interior, the J/11S for shorthanded racing and the J/112E, a perfect cruiser racer. They will also be showcasing pre-owned yachts, including models available for immediate delivery to get sailing this summer.
MS&P Yacht Brokers will have a full line up of 50 sailing yachts ashore at the event, including the Greenline 33 and Greenline 40, eco friendly walk-around style motor cruisers. Universal Yachting, Dufour Yachts’ Southern dealer, will also be at the show with the new Dufour 350 GL sailing yacht. They will also have details of their RYA Approved Sailing School, offering RYA training and bespoke courses. Inspiration Marine will have a selection of Hanse Yachts on display, with the range going from 31ft to 68ft.
Nic Parton, Marina Manager at MDL’s Hamble Point Marina, commented: “We have a superb selection of models at this year’s event and are delighted to be playing host to a number of UK debuts, as well as giving visitors the chance to see new ranges for the very first time. Hamble Point Boats on Show offers a great opportunity for anyone interested in making a new purchase, or even becoming a boat owner for the first time, to come and have a look. The sun is set to be shining and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone and showcasing all that Hamble Point Marina and the on-site marine brands have to offer.”
On the Sunday of the event (15th May), the Hampshire Constabulary Marine Unit in conjunction with Ramora UK, one of the UK’s leading bomb disposal companies, will be offering "a distress flare amnesty" for private boat owners. The disposal of out-of-date flares is a growing problem for owners who face severe penalties if they fail to follow the correct procedures. Flares can be disposed of safely at the marina between 10am and 3pm.
For further information about the event, visit www.hamblepointboatsonshow.co.uk.
If you're thinking of buying a used yacht or motor boat, be sure to visit Hamble Point Marina’s 'Boats on Show' from 14th to 15th May 2016.
Over 250 boats will be on sale at the event, with buyers able to choose from sail craft, dayboats, sportsboats, cruisers and RIBs. Visitors will be free to wander around one of the south’s leading marina locations, taking in the boats for sale onshore and afloat, speaking to expert brokers and finding out more about the other marine services available on-site, with visitors also able to retire to the Ketch Rigger restaurant and bar for some much-needed refreshment.
A flare amnesty will also take place on Sunday 15th May - more information can be read here.
The team at MDL’s Hamble Point Marina is delighted to announce that London 2012 bronze medallists, Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell, have been named as part of Britain's Paralympic sailing squad for this summer's Paralympic Games in Rio.
The athletes have been training at Hamble Point Marina for many dedicated months in preparation for their selection. Berthing their SKUD 18 racing sailing boat at Hamble Point Marina during key points throughout their training, has given them essential access to the waters of the Solent. The helpful marina team has been lifting the race boats out of the water and re-launching them whenever they’re needed, in their bid to support the Paralympians.
With five world titles under their belts, the duo have high hopes for the Games. The pair only narrowly missed out on a gold medal at the 2014 Disabled Sailing World Championships in Canada that saw Great Britain qualify for Rio 2016. Alexandra commented: “Being selected by Paralympics GB is one of the final hurdles on this four year marathon and we couldn’t be more excited about this September. With the last few months abroad it has been great to get back to Hamble Point Marina, which we now consider home. It is amazing how supportive the team are and we hope to do them all proud in five months time.”
A hub for competitive racing in the Solent, Hamble Point Marina offers an ideal location for the team to train. Nic Parton, Marina Manager, said: “We really enjoy having the athletes here and couldn’t be happier that they’ve made the selection. It’s an honour to welcome two such inspiring and skilled athletes to the marina and to be playing a part in the British Paralympic effort for Rio 2016. We have a vibrant sailing scene here at the marina, so it’s brilliant to be hosting these sailing stars.”

MDL Marinas, Europe’s leading marina operator is launching an exciting charitable initiative on 1st March, which will see its team and customers cycle the entire route of its UK marina network and back again to help raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK.
The company initiative was created in support of Mike Glanville, MDL’s Group Head of Operations who has undertaken two charitable runs to-date following the loss of one of his best friends to Prostate Cancer. Mike is currently in training for his third and biggest run – the Virgin London Marathon on 24th April.
The MDL Marinas team decided that whilst Mike puts on his running shoes and pounds miles and miles of pavement, they would support him by cycling the whopping 1,634 miles in an effort to raise an additional £1,634 for Prostate Cancer UK – a target that the team are hoping to smash! To conquer the challenge MDL’s static bike will be making a grand tour of its 18 marinas including locations in Poole, Torquay, Plymouth and The Thames, where team members and customers will be challenged to hop on the bike and cycle to raise funds for such a worthy cause.
Adrien Burnand, Head of Marketing at MDL Marinas, commented: “We have been hugely impressed by Mike’s dedication and continued training for such a great cause, and decided it was only right to help boost his fundraising efforts and show our support. We are all very excited about the cycle challenge and are looking forward to seeing all of our team, as well as many of our willing berth holders’ cycle up a storm in one of our 18 UK marina locations.
Mike Glanville, MDL’s Group Head of Operations, commented: “It’s fantastic that the team at MDL are running this initiative and helping to raise further funds for the charity. One of my very best friends sadly passed away after an epic battle with Prostate Cancer. This cancer affects thousands of men each year, and we are hoping the MDL cycle challenge, along with my running efforts, will not only help raise further funds to find a new cure, but also help raise awareness of the cancer amongst our customers and teams in an effort to help more men survive prostate cancer and enjoy a better quality of life.”

Last year, MDL Marinas teamed up with Marwell Wildlife to announce MDL’s involvement in the public art extravaganza, Marwell’s Zany Zebras, which will take place this summer.
For ten weeks throughout the summer, starting on 16th July, zebra sculptures will inhabit the streets of Southampton, showcasing the wealth of artistic talent in the area, while highlighting the significant conservation threat facing wild zebras and how the Southampton business community can make a difference. Following the success of Go! Rhinos in 2013, Marwell’s Zany Zebras promises to be even bigger and better.
To celebrate the involvement in this year’s event, MDL Marinas is holding a fantastic competition inviting people to get their creative juices flowing and submit a design of an ‘Under the Sea’ creature. Local artist Tom Joyce, has innovatively designed ‘Zebastian the Seabra’, a Grevy’s zebra sculpture painted with over 100 fun and unique cartoon sea creatures including a catfish, swordfish and jellyfish. The winning creation will be included in Tom’s final painting on ‘Zebastian the Seabra’ for all to see and receive an annual family pass to Marwell Zoo. The top three entries will also all receive family day tickets to Marwell Zoo and the Southampton Boat Show.
Marwell’s Zany Zebras aims to raise money for charity, promote local business and encourage local tourism. After the event, all of the sculptures will be sold at auction with proceeds going towards conservation of these animals and other wildlife plus give support to communities living in the arid landscapes of northern Kenya.
Adrien Burnand, Head of Marketing at MDL, commented: “We are delighted to be a part of Marwell's Zany Zebras campaign. It’s a fantastic way of raising awareness of the conservation work Marwell Wildlife carries out to protect endangered Grévy’s zebras. MDL has six marinas in the Solent which play an integral part in the life of the city and we can’t wait to see ‘Zebastian the Seabra’ featuring the winning artwork.”
Kirstie Mathieson, Project Manager for Marwell’s Zany Zebras, said: “Marwell’s Zany Zebras will showcase Southampton and all the city has to offer, including the beautiful marinas. Art trails of this nature provide a great vehicle for tourists and we are delighted that MDL is engaging the surrounding community with their ‘Feature your Creature’ campaign, a unique opportunity to be part of an amazing piece of art.”
If you would like to be in with a chance of having your ‘Under the Sea’ creation included as part of MDL’s Feature your Creature campaign and the opportunity to win fantastic prizes please visit: www.mdlmarinas.co.uk/creature.
