MDL Marinas Sponsor Hamble Big Boat Championships

Posted: 4th October 2012

This weekend sees the first weekend of racing action in the MDL Hamble Big Boat Championships. Taking place on 6th and 7th October, the event will incorporate a First 40 and 40.7 national event, with some of the very best racing talent taking part.

The series continues later in the month with a further two days of racing on 20th and 21st October bringing the action to a close.

Dean Smith, Marketing Director at MDL Marinas, commented: “MDL Marinas is delighted to be sponsoring this year’s Hamble Big Boat Championships. The series is a natural fit with MDL, being based just offshore from our Hamble Point Marina and involving much of the local community. MDL Marinas works hard to encourage young people to become active in sailing, working with the Ocean Youth Trust South to give deserving youngsters the chance to participate in the sport, so it’s great to be involved in another fantastic sailing event. We’re all looking forward to some great racing action over the coming weeks.”

MDL Marinas is also proud to support the Hamble River Sailing Club’s cadet series, which will be playing host to a Pico regatta as part of this weekend’s sailing.

MDL Wins PBO Green Award

Posted: 20th September 2012

MDL Marinas, is proud to announce its prestigious win in this year’s Practical Boat Owner Green Awards. The marina network received the award for ‘Best Marine Service and Support’ in recognition of its efforts in reducing the environmental impact of its 21 marinas and boatyards.

MDL worked hard to implement a range of measures to promote marine-industry sustainability and achieve its outstanding eco-credentials. We now purchase 100% renewable energy, have installed solar technology, recycle 100% of our hazardous waste, and introduced water saving measures across all of our locations in Europe.

Dean Smith, Marketing Director at MDL Marinas, commented: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious award and to be recognised for our efforts in reducing our environmental impact.”

Anna Wyse, MDL’s dedicated Environmental Policy Manager, commented: “The beautiful locations of our marinas deserve special consideration if we are to enjoy them in years to come and we have invested considerable time and energy into putting our environmental practices in place. MDL recognises that virtually all the activities of the company, and that of our customers and tenants, have some impact on the environment.

“All of MDL’s marinas are subject to environmental audits on a periodic basis and the company continues to invest in resources to educate berth holders and staff.”

MDL received its Green Award at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show. The PBO Green Award for ‘Best Marine Service and Support’ was presented to Anna Wyse, and to MDL’s Managing Director, Eamonn Feeney and Chief Operating Officer, Jon Eads by Sarah Norbury, Editor of Practical Boat Owner.

In addition to this, Hythe Marina Village, MDL’s Southampton based marina, has also won a sustainability award from The Green Blue, for going above and beyond in its support of the environmental awareness campaign for the boating community. The MDL marina distributed free packs of environmental goodies to its berth holders encouraging their boaters to make quick practical changes onboard.

Active Marina at PSP Southampton Boat Show

Posted: 6th September 2012

Many Club Outlook members will already be familiar with the RYA’s Active Marina Programme, as successful workshops have been held at many MDL marinas across the summer season.

Visitors to this month’s PSP Southampton Boat Show will also have the chance to try out a sample of the workshops for themselves, as part of a brand new event at the show.

The Active Marina Experience offers show-goers the opportunity to refresh their boating skills and gain top tips from expert instructors with free on-the-water and shore-based workshops.

From man overboard drills and berthing manoeuvres to engine maintenance and radar operation, workshops will run daily throughout the show, providing a real hands-on experience.

Places are limited for the workshops, so it’s recommended that sessions are booked either in advance for the shore-based workshops, or on the day for the on-the-water sessions.

To book an on-the-water workshop visit the ‘Try-a-Boat’ booking point on stand A140, when you arrive at the show.  (Unfortunately, on-the-water workshops cannot be booked in advance)

Shore-based workshops can be booked in advance by emailing bookings@which-marina.com, calling 01784 223816 or by visiting the Which Marina stand (F004) at the show.

For further information and a workshop schedule visit the RYA website.

Snap Happy with MDL - Photo Winners Announced

Posted: 4th September 2012

Entries flooded in this summer for MDL’s annual photo competition, which for the first time this year included an under-16s category, alongside the coveted best photograph.

Berth holders, visitors and members of the local community from across the marina network submitted photographs that captured time spent in and around our marinas in the UK and Europe, including fast-paced action shots and footage out on the water, as well as some stunning landscape shots.

Hugely impressed with the quality of entries this year, judges were looking for entries that have succeeded in capturing in images what really makes each of MDL’s 21 marinas a truly unique destination – through the eyes of people who experience the marinas for themselves.

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2012 photography competition is David Thomas, with a winning image capturing a stunning sunset over Brixham Marina.

As this year’s winner, David will receive a Nikon Coolpix L810 camera, plus a workshop session with leading studio photographers at PhotoRed Commercial Photography, based at MDL’s Shamrock Quay. He will also be treated to a bottle of Champagne and tickets to the PSP Southampton Boat Show – where he will see his winning image displayed on MDL’s two-tier waterside pavilion.

Second place in the main competition, winning £100 worth of vouchers to use at London Camera Exchange, is awarded to Martin Makinen from Newton Abbott, for his beautiful shot of the sun breaking through the clouds at Holden Pier near to Brixham Marina.

For the first time, this year’s competition included a dedicated category for young photographers, with first prize in the under-16s competition going to Sophie Tuffier from Cherbourg. Sophie’s parents are Cruising Club members and were visiting Brixham Marina, where she snapped her winning shot of a beautiful sunny day in the water. Sophie will be presented with a Nikon Coolpix S30 underwater camera to help her continue her photographic endeavours.

Coming a close second in the under-16s category is 12–year-old Christopher Broughton, whose shot of sunset over Shamrock Quay has won him £50 to spend at London Camera Exchange.

All the winners will also receive tickets to the PSP Southampton Boat Show, where they will be presented with their prizes at the MDL stand (E52) on Wednesday 19th September at 2pm.

River Hamble Games a Resounding Success!

Posted: 23rd July 2012

The first ever River Hamble Games, inspired by the 2012 Olympics, took place on Saturday 21st July with 26 teams and over 300 competitors taking part in the 5 events: Swimming, Running, Kayaking, Sailing and Rowing.  It was a fantastic spectacle with a great community spirit that brought together all sides of the river.

The Games hosted the first open water swim in the River with over 70 swimmers taking to the water.  The tide proved challenging but made for a great competition with spectators all along the Warsash banks cheering the swimmers to the finish.

The 5K and 10K runs ended with a spectacular finish down Hamble High Street cobbles into the village.  Gold in the 10K went to Stubbington Green team captain Lewis Chalk in a fantastic time.

The Gig racing followed the swimming on the Warsash stretch of water, with Elephant Boatyard taking the Gold.

The wind filled in enough for some great dinghy racing in the Sailing event which took place in Southampton Water, just off Hamble Point.  The Laser class was narrowly won on count back by Russell Peters.

The Kayaking slalom race was staged just off the Hamble foreshore with some tricky manoeuvres required to complete the course.

The day was wrapped off with the Medal ceremony at MDL’s Hamble Point Marina where Round the World Yachting Legend Mike Golding OBE presented the medals to the winners. The overall winning team was RK Marine who took Gold, Silver went to Bursledon Bods and Bronze went to Stubbington Green XYZ.

Thanks go to the 75 volunteers who helped run the event, River Hamble Harbour Authority and all the various sporting clubs, Itseeze, MDL Marinas, Coopervision, CoastGraphics and all event sponsors and supporters

Results are on the website at www.riverhamblegames.com/register.
