Organisers and exhibitors recently welcomed over 1,400 people to the Hamble Point Boat Show, held at MDL’s Hamble Point Marina. Linking up with National Watersports Month, the free show marked the start of the boating season and brought together boating enthusiasts and members of the local community for an action-packed family weekend on and off the water.
The event offered plenty of activities and boating demonstrations for visitors to enjoy during the two-day event. Coastal Pursuits, in conjunction with the RYA Active Marina Programme, took more than 60 people out on exhilarating RIB rides, while activities for younger visitors included Micro Magic racing, tea cup rides and face-painting. An impressive 2,000 flares were handed in to the 'distress flare amnesty', run by Hampshire Constabulary Marine Unit in conjunction with Ramora UK.
The show saw six members of the Sail 4 Cancer team successfully complete an unusual challenge at the marina, to raise funds for UK families affected by cancer. The Poker Playing Sea Dogs from Kingsclere, Hampshire, spent 24 hours in a life raft, raising £2,000 for their efforts. The group of intrepid card players passed the time playing extreme poker on the water!
Lizette van Niekerk, Fundraising Manager at Sail 4 Cancer, said: “The show provided a fantastic atmosphere for our fundraising team, who were sponsored to spend 24 hours in a life raft at the marina. Visitors to the show were very supportive of the team and we’d like to thank them all for their generosity and encouragement.”
Visitors were also able to browse hundreds of new and used boats, including the Cornish Crabbers and Mystery Yachts ranges. Exhibitor Adrian Hart, Sales Manager at Cornish Crabbers, said: “Hamble Point Marina is an ideal location for a boat show, thanks to its versatile site and central position. We were very happy with the number and variety of people who came to see us and feel that the show has the potential to be even bigger and better next year!”
Hamble-based international yacht brokerage, MGM Boats, also exhibited at the show. Office Manager, Mark White, added: “We’ve been a part of the Hamble Point Boat Show for the past two years and always find it a well organised and well supported show. We were pleased with the number of sales leads we made over the weekend, and we also sold two boats!”
Visitors to the show were also able to browse a range of marine products, engineering services and equipment, with exhibitors including global marine technicians, Landau UK Ltd. Jonathon Bagge, Project Manager at Landau UK, commented: “This was our first year exhibiting at the show and judging by the results we saw, we will be coming back again next year. We were impressed with the efficiency of the staff and how well looked after we were from the moment we arrived.”
Nicholas Parton, General Manager at Hamble Point Marina, said: “We had a fantastic event and are delighted to have welcomed so many visitors. We have received some brilliant feedback from visitors, exhibitors and tenants and we are thrilled that the Sail 4 Cancer team raised such an impressive amount during their 24-hour challenge. We are already looking forward to next year’s event, where we hope to welcome even more people to the marina!”
Six deserving youngsters who won a place on this year’s MDL Sail Training Awards are now back on dry land, after setting sail from MDL’s Ocean Village Marina on 16th April for six days at sea.
The MDL-sponsored awards, which have been running for over 20 years, offer admirable young people - carefully selected due to their exceptional accomplishments, or for overcoming adverse personal circumstances – the opportunity of a lifetime aboard a training yacht operated by Ocean Youth Trust South.
Joining a team on board the ketch 'John Laing' were Callum Archibald, 14, from Basingstoke, 13-year-old John Bratherton, from Fordingbridge, Erin Sutton, 14, and Jodie Beckham, 13, both from Totton, Oscar Perkins, 13, from Brixham and 15-year-old Robert Jelley from Romsey.
The 230 nautical mile trip saw this year's MDL award winners first heading for an anchorage in Studland, from where they motored into Poole on the Friday evening. Next morning they had a fabulous sail round the south of the Isle of Wight on a glorious day, ending up in Haslar. They sailed to Cowes for lunch, came out, anchored an Osborne Bay and planned a final pilotage exercise up to Southampton. RYA Start Yachting certificates were awarded to all participants.
Eamonn Feeney, Managing Director at MDL Marinas, commented: “We’re delighted to welcome back our Sail Training Awards winners following their exciting journey. This really is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for the young people selected, rewarding them for their achievements or inspiration and support to others.
“Over the years the MDL sponsored Sail Training Awards have provided over 140 young people the opportunity to experience a trip on board the 'John Laing', something which has been life-changing for some of our past winners. We are proud to continue to support Ocean Youth Trust South and the important work that it carries out”.
One of the scheme’s recent success stories is 17-year-old Toby Hunt from Bognor Regis who was one of the lucky winners selected to take part in last year’s trip, and has since been busy working as a volunteer, assisting Ocean Youth Trust South with its winter refit of ‘John Laing’. In addition, Toby has been working hard as a volunteer trainee Bosun for the 2014 trip and is looking to become a volunteer member of the sea staff for the future.
The six young winners from this year will now be invited to attend the PSP Southampton Boat Show, where they will be officially presented with their trophies at the MDL stand by the owner of MDL Marinas, Lord Iliffe.
Nominations for next year’s awards will be announced in December 2014.
