With news of a mini heat wave forecast this weekend, why not join the team at Hamble Point Marina and enjoy a number of events taking place, including the popular Flare Amnesty, as well as the chance to book a personal slot to step on board and sea trial a J Boat of your choice.
This Saturday (18th October) will be the J Boat Open Day – offering a fantastic opportunity to come and view the J Boat of your choice. On display will be the J/70, J/80, J/88, J/95, J/97E, J/109, J/111 and J/122E, along with a dazzling array of brokerage boats on show. If you wish to book a slot to look around any of the models, or to undertake a demo sail, please just get in touch with the Key Yachting team by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 023 8045 5669. On the day, the team will also be at the Ketch Rigger from 9.30am to assist with viewings and sailings.
Following this will be the popular Flare Amnesty (Sunday 19th October) which runs from 10am to 3pm at Hamble Point Marina in conjunction with the Hampshire Constabulary Marine unit and Ramora UK, one of the UK’s leading bomb disposal companies. This event is being held in response to the growing problem of out-of-date flare disposal, which can leave owners facing severe penalties if they fail to follow the correct procedures.
On the day, the parties will be offering a “distress flare amnesty” for private boat owners and the chance to dispose of up to 10 flares per person free of charge*, with a request for a charitable donation. The monies raised by the organisers will go towards the purchase of sailing dinghies which they will then donate to local sailing clubs to be used by young people that may not get the chance to experience the sport of sailing.
There will also be flare demonstrations taking place on the day, which always makes for a popular and rare viewing.
In addition to the Flare Amnesty, the RNLI will be at the marina from 10am to 3pm offering free lifejacket checks. The team will be on hand to check your lifejackets are safe and teach useful tips on how to choose, fit and maintain your lifejacket.
Across the two days the Ketch Rigger will be serving up its delicious range of food including their traditional Sunday carvery from 12pm. The chef will serve up roast beef or roast of the day with Yorkshire pudding, with a selection of delicious fresh vegetables for £10.50 per person.

Dean Smith, Operations and Marketing Director, MDL said: “MDL Marinas is delighted to be the lead sponsor for this year’s Hamble Big Boat Championships. The series is a natural fit with MDL – being based just offshore from our Hamble Point Marina and involving much of the local community. MDL Marinas works hard to encourage young people to become active in sailing, working with the Ocean Youth Trust South to give deserving young people the chance to participate in the sport, so it’s great to be involved in another fantastic sailing event. We’re all looking forward to some great racing action over the coming weeks.”
The MDL Big Boat Championships are celebrating their 8th edition this year and have grown over the years to become a key component of the Garmin Hamble Winter Series. Prize giving is at 3.30pm each Sunday race day at Hamble River Sailing Club, which offers a warm welcome, hot food and competitively priced beer!

It was great to welcome so many berth holders and visitors to our stand at the PSP Southampton Boat Show. We hope you had a fantastic time and enjoyed our hospitality, and we look forward to seeing you at our marinas very soon.
It was certainly an action packed 10 days, where we welcomed over 4,500 visitors to our stand, served just under 7,000 drinks (many of them containing alcohol!), and we hosted a number of great events, all in the lovely September sunshine.
Here’s a quick snapshot of some of the highlights of the show...
We hope you enjoy the rest of the season and we look forward to seeing you over the coming months. Just a quick reminder we will also be at the London Boat Show from Friday 9th January and hope to see many of you there too!
Happy Boating from all the team at MDL.
This is Macmillan's biggest fundraising event, where we ask people across the UK to hold a coffee morning and raise money for people living with cancer. In 2013, 154,000 people signed up, raising a record £20 million. Several of MDL's marinas will be hosting these mornings:
So come along for some coffee and baked goods in order to support this brilliant cause.
