Torquay Marina in Devon is eagerly awaiting the arrival of some of the world’s top sailors when the 45th edition of La Solitair du Figaro arrives in Torbay Harbour late Wednesday evening.
Considered to be the world championships for single-handed yachtsmen and women, and one of the main training grounds for the famous Vendee Globe race, the sailors will race into Torbay Harbour for the first time in race history, berthing an impressive fleet of Figaro Bénéteau IIs (identical 33ft boats made for solo sailing).
The 40-strong fleet of both British and French boats and their skippers are calling in as part of a 2,000-mile challenge which criss-crosses the English Channel - visiting the UK for only the second time in the 11 year history of the prestigious event.
Currently there are five British boats in the top twenty and three in the top ten, including local sailor Henry Bomby. The MDL team will be cheering them all on after racing an impressive 1585 miles, with 600 miles still to go.
Celebrations will include a grand firework display at 10pm on Saturday and plenty of entertainment from the race village, as thousands of onlookers are expected to attend.

It’s a very exciting time for Torquay and our team and berth holders will be joining in with all the celebrations as part of this momentous occasion.”
Leg four will begin from Torbay on Sunday 21st June at 2pm where the MDL team will be joining thousands of people to cheer the skippers out of the marina as they begin their final race to France.

Europe’s leading marina operator, MDL Marinas, recently partnered with UK charity water brand, One Water, to provide its customers with a gift that will not only help to save lives in Africa’s developing countries, but also keep them hydrated whilst afloat this summer.
MDL purchased over 5,000 1.5 litre bottles of One Water to send out to their customers in special water cooler bags, ahead of the new boating season. As well as being the perfect practical gift for a long day out on the water, 100% of the profit generated by One Water’s bottled water is donated to bringing safe, sustainable water supplies to communities across Africa.
Adrien Burnand, Head of Marketing for MDL Marinas, commented: “We are really pleased to have collaborated with One Water to give our berth holders a renewal gift that will help transform lives. We feel there is great synergy between our two organisations and hope the water we purchased will help make a real difference.”
Since launching 11 years ago, One Water has raised more than £11 million and changed the lives of 2.7 million people, funding water programmes in countries such as Malawi, South Sudan, Angola, Kenya and Niger. Ian Spooner, Marketing Director at One Water, commented: “Teaming up with a prestigious marina organisation such as MDL Marinas provides an excellent way of informing an audience, which is passionate about water, about the global water crisis, and how they can help.”
If you would like to help this hugely worthwhile cause, MDL has set up their own JustGiving page. Alternatively, you can donate to One Water by simply texting MDLM47 and the amount you would like to donate to 70070.

Torbay is set to host the UK leg of the famous Solitaire du Figaro yacht race in what promises to be a spectacular event for the region. The 40-strong fleet of British and French boats and their skippers will call in to Torquay Marina in June as part of a 2,000-mile challenge, criss-crossing the English Channel. It’s only the second time in 11 years the prestigious event - the unofficial world championship of solo offshore sailing - has enjoyed a UK stopover.
“This is going to be a huge occasion,” says Bob Penfold, Commodore, Royal Torbay Yacht Club. “It’s going to raise the profile of the Bay on the international sailing scene. As a club, we are really excited about this opportunity.”
Organisers are keen to stress that the stopover from 17th to 21st June will delight everyone, whether or not they’re sailing enthusiasts. A specially created race village in Torquay’s Beacon Quay will allow people to meet the competitors and get up close to the striking 33ft-long yachts. There are plans for a grand firework display and plenty of entertainment to entertain the thousands of onlookers expected to attend.
The highlight will be the spectacular sight of more than 40 sailing boats with their skippers taking part in a professionals and amateurs race (pro-am) across the Bay. The fleet will depart for the fourth leg of their month-long race on 21st June after an outdoor multi-faith service of celebration and thanks.
