The team at MDL’s Torquay Marina recently invited berth holders to join them for their annual Summer Party, which was hosted at waterside restaurant, Pier Point Restaurant and Bar.
Pier Point, situated just 800 metres from the marina and offering beautiful views out across the water, served the finest local cuisine and champagne from 7pm until the early hours. Over 150 guests attended the Summer Party and enjoyed live music from local two-piece band, Celine Dos Santos.
Mike Smith, Manager at Torquay Marina, commented: “It really was a wonderful evening; we were delighted with the turnout and the staff at Pier Point were brilliant. This event offers the perfect opportunity for our berth holders to socialise together. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves - it was our best Summer Party yet!”
Sunseeker Torquay was pleased to be the main sponsor of the party. Sales Director Tom Wills commented: “It was the first time the Torquay Marina Summer Party has been held at Pier Point, and it’s been absolutely fantastic – the restaurant’s team laid on a superb event for us with great food, atmosphere and, most importantly, happy customers!”
The next day, many of the berth holders who had attended the party joined an impromptu Sunseeker Torquay Marina Rendezvous on the water at Babbacombe Bay. Over 20 boats took part, enjoying a relaxed afternoon at anchor in the sunshine.
MDL Marinas, Europe’s leading marina operator, is looking forward to exhibiting at this year’s Southampton Boat Show, when it will return once again to its impressive two-tier waterfront location.
Staff members will be on hand throughout the show to welcome berth holders and visitors to the stand and showcase MDL’s network of outstanding marinas in the UK and Europe. This year, the team will be running a competition to win a year’s free berthing at MDL’s stunning five-star Marina di Stabia. Located in the beautiful Bay of Naples in Italy, Marina di Stabia is a new generation superyacht facility offering long-term berthing opportunities at incredible rates. With 900 berths, the marina is located in close reach of a rich picking of famous scenic spots including Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi and Pompeii.
Freedom Berthing members will, as normal, benefit from exclusive hospitality in our MyMDL Lounge. The balcony offers a wonderful view over the boat show marina, ideal to enjoy a complimentary drink or two in the sun (should the weather be kind to us). Berth holders can also take advantage of free parking at Ocean Car Park in Ocean Village Marina. Simply hand in your parking ticket when presenting your card at the Freedom Berthing reception desk and we will exchange this for an exit pass.
The show will also see the MDL team recognise the achievement of a group of deserving young people who have completed their Sail Training Awards, during a special ceremony. The MDL-sponsored awards have been running for nearly 30 years, offering admirable young people - carefully selected due to their exceptional accomplishments, or for overcoming adverse personal circumstances – the opportunity of a lifetime aboard a training yacht operated by Ocean Youth Trust South.
Other highlights of the show for MDL include cheque presentations to two UK charities, Heroes on the Water and Julia’s House children’s hospice, thanks to Cobb’s Quay Marina’s fundraising efforts. The marina holds an annual fishing competition to raise funds for sailing charity, Heroes on the Water, which this year raised £650. The team also recently held a golf day at Bulbury Woods golf course, raising an incredible £2,000 for Julia’s House.
Our cleat challenge game, first seen at the America's Cup World Series event in Portsmouth, will make a welcome return. Those participating will have the chance to win a Henri Lloyd jacket by posting the fastest time during the course of the show.
MDL will also be announcing the results of its annual ‘MDL in Bloom’ competition, which rewards green-fingered marina teams across all 19 UK locations, who have been working hard throughout the summer to ensure that their sites are looking their best.
Adrien Burnand, Head of Marketing at MDL Marinas, commented: “The Southampton Boat Show is a real highlight of the boating calendar for us and a show at which we really enjoy exhibiting. We look forward to welcoming visitors, along with our existing berth holders for exclusive hospitality, and have lots of exciting events planned. The show also gives us a great opportunity to recognise the achievements of our staff and the young people receiving their Sail Training Awards.”

Torquay Marina in Devon is eagerly awaiting the arrival of some of the world’s top sailors when the 45th edition of La Solitair du Figaro arrives in Torbay Harbour late Wednesday evening.
Considered to be the world championships for single-handed yachtsmen and women, and one of the main training grounds for the famous Vendee Globe race, the sailors will race into Torbay Harbour for the first time in race history, berthing an impressive fleet of Figaro Bénéteau IIs (identical 33ft boats made for solo sailing).
The 40-strong fleet of both British and French boats and their skippers are calling in as part of a 2,000-mile challenge which criss-crosses the English Channel - visiting the UK for only the second time in the 11 year history of the prestigious event.
Currently there are five British boats in the top twenty and three in the top ten, including local sailor Henry Bomby. The MDL team will be cheering them all on after racing an impressive 1585 miles, with 600 miles still to go.
Celebrations will include a grand firework display at 10pm on Saturday and plenty of entertainment from the race village, as thousands of onlookers are expected to attend.
Mike Smith, Manager at Torquay Marina, commented: “We’re really looking forward to the race coming to Torbay Harbour for the first time in the race’s history. It’s a very exciting time for Torquay and our team and berth holders will be joining in with all the celebrations as part of this momentous occasion.”
Leg four will begin from Torbay on Sunday 21st June at 2pm where the MDL team will be joining thousands of people to cheer the skippers out of the marina as they begin their final race to France.
