MDL Marinas is preparing for a year of celebration as it marks 40 successful years since the opening of its first marina. Purchased in 1973, Penton Hook Marina in Surrey has since been joined by 18 marinas and boatyards in prime locations across the UK, as well as two first-class marinas in its MDL Mediterranean network. A third Mediterranean site, Marina del Gargano in Italy is due to open this spring, with the new addition seeing the network of marinas grow to 22.
A series of events and activities to mark this important occasion are now being planned throughout 2013, including a celebratory event at the PSP Southampton Boat Show. The search is also on for berth holders who have chosen to keep their boat in an MDL marina from the very beginning - if this is you then please let us know!
Jon Eads, Chief Operating Officer at MDL Marinas, commented: “We are very pleased and proud to be celebrating 40 years of continued success for MDL Marinas in 2013. The past four decades have seen the company grow to become Europe’s leading marina operator, recognised for our excellent customer service and superb boating locations. We are delighted to welcome our staff and berth holders to celebrate with us and are looking forward to what this exciting year has in store.”
The sixth annual pre-Christmas cruise to the historic city of St Malo was again sold out this year, with 344 Club Outlook members, along with their friends and family, joining us for a great weekend away.
The ever-popular mini cruise took place on Friday 7th – Sunday 9th December and headed to the picturesque region of Brittany. Our group enjoyed a two night stay in cabin accommodation, a splendid four-course meal on Saturday evening, and plenty of opportunities to visit the beautiful area and stock up on Christmas ‘essentials’.
Joanna Young, who went on the pre-Christmas cruise, said: "Thank you to the team who organised the Pre-Christmas Cruise to St Malo for all their hard work. We were guests of our parents whose boat is based at Northney Marina, and we had a brilliant time. The kids enjoyed it and the food was amazing."
Mike Smith, organiser of the trip and Manager of Torquay Marina, commented: “It was fantastic that this year’s pre-Christmas cruise was again sold out. It was yet another successful and enjoyable weekend away and thank you to all of those who came along. A later start time on the Friday morning was definitely appreciated, as opposed to our usual renowned early boarding times, and we’re looking forward to arranging the cruise again next year.”
As an annual or two-year berth holder, you also enjoy Club Outlook benefits and savings throughout the year. Our Club Outlook scheme is the most comprehensive in the industry and offers great rewards, including the Mediterranean addition to the Freedom Berthing network and our new Introduce Your Friends scheme.
Other Club Outlook rewards include fuel at cost, unlimited free WiFi access at all of our marinas, as well as discounted boatyard services. Annual and two-year berth holders enjoy a standard discount of 30% - the most generous discount of any boatyard service provider. This means Club Outlook members receive high standard boat care services at the best possible rates.
New for Club Outlook members in 2013 is our new Berth Swap service and Smart MDL. Berth Swap is a great new initiative which allows Club Outlook members to get in touch with other like-minded customers who may be looking to swap berths as part of their cruising arrangements. Club Outlook members are automatically registered into Berth Swap and at the touch of a button can request or browse berths available. Watch for details on our website.
We know you love your boat and that you’d love to spend more time on board. However, to make sure your time is well spent we are developing more ways for you to get in touch and get the things you want out of your boating – we’re calling this Smart MDL. This enables you to put your Club Outlook details on your smart phone and be the first to receive our latest discounts and offers, as well as get easy access to berth reservations and Berth Swap.
In addition to all of these services we also have our innovative Freedom Berthing scheme, which was launched last year. Freedom Berthing offers unlimited visitor nights across all of the network’s UK marinas, and has now been extended to include Sant Carles Marina in Spain, and Marina del Gargano in Italy when it opens next year. This gives you the opportunity to enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine and all the facilities provided by these first-class marinas, as part of your Club Outlook membership.
Another of our innovative rewards schemes is Introduce Your Friends, allowing you to introduce friends and benefit from a wide-range of rewards. For each new friend that joins the network, the value of the rewards increases. Introducing one friend offers you and your friend £250 each in rewards, two friends £300, three friends £400 and so on, with a maximum of nine friends each receiving £1,000 in rewards. You can choose from a variety of rewards including vouchers to spend at participating marina tenant companies, wine vouchers from Club Outlook’s wine partner Naked Wines, credit on your MDL customer account to use for MDL services, or request a charity donation to the RNLI.

In association with the RYA, Stormforce Coaching are offering MDL's Southampton based berth holders (Shamrock Quay, Saxon Wharf, Hythe Marina Village and Ocean Village Marina) the chance to enjoy some hands-on tuition with their Winterisation Workshop on Saturday November 24th 2012.
As yachts are lifted for winter, many owners will winterise their boat’s engine to ensure it survives the cold temperatures and starts first time next season. The practical workshop will be full of top tips, whatever your engine type. Those taking part will spend 2 hours with an experienced instructor for just £20 at Stormfoce's training centre in Shamrock Quay. Spaces are limited, so it is advisable to book now to guarantee your place.
If you would like to spend some time in the warmth of the classroom this winter, you might also enjoy the winter seminars that Stormforce are holding: Weather for Yachtsmen (9th February) and How to get the best from your Radar (23rd February).

MDL Marinas, is proud to announce its prestigious win in this year’s Practical Boat Owner Green Awards. The marina network received the award for ‘Best Marine Service and Support’ in recognition of its efforts in reducing the environmental impact of its 21 marinas and boatyards.
MDL worked hard to implement a range of measures to promote marine-industry sustainability and achieve its outstanding eco-credentials. We now purchase 100% renewable energy, have installed solar technology, recycle 100% of our hazardous waste, and introduced water saving measures across all of our locations in Europe.
Dean Smith, Marketing Director at MDL Marinas, commented: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious award and to be recognised for our efforts in reducing our environmental impact.”
Anna Wyse, MDL’s dedicated Environmental Policy Manager, commented: “The beautiful locations of our marinas deserve special consideration if we are to enjoy them in years to come and we have invested considerable time and energy into putting our environmental practices in place. MDL recognises that virtually all the activities of the company, and that of our customers and tenants, have some impact on the environment.
“All of MDL’s marinas are subject to environmental audits on a periodic basis and the company continues to invest in resources to educate berth holders and staff.”
MDL received its Green Award at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show. The PBO Green Award for ‘Best Marine Service and Support’ was presented to Anna Wyse, and to MDL’s Managing Director, Eamonn Feeney and Chief Operating Officer, Jon Eads by Sarah Norbury, Editor of Practical Boat Owner.
In addition to this, Hythe Marina Village, MDL’s Southampton based marina, has also won a sustainability award from The Green Blue, for going above and beyond in its support of the environmental awareness campaign for the boating community. The MDL marina distributed free packs of environmental goodies to its berth holders encouraging their boaters to make quick practical changes onboard.
Many Club Outlook members will already be familiar with the RYA’s Active Marina Programme, as successful workshops have been held at many MDL marinas across the summer season.
Visitors to this month’s PSP Southampton Boat Show will also have the chance to try out a sample of the workshops for themselves, as part of a brand new event at the show.
The Active Marina Experience offers show-goers the opportunity to refresh their boating skills and gain top tips from expert instructors with free on-the-water and shore-based workshops.
From man overboard drills and berthing manoeuvres to engine maintenance and radar operation, workshops will run daily throughout the show, providing a real hands-on experience.
Places are limited for the workshops, so it’s recommended that sessions are booked either in advance for the shore-based workshops, or on the day for the on-the-water sessions.
To book an on-the-water workshop visit the ‘Try-a-Boat’ booking point on stand A140, when you arrive at the show. (Unfortunately, on-the-water workshops cannot be booked in advance)
Shore-based workshops can be booked in advance by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, calling 01784 223816 or by visiting the Which Marina stand (F004) at the show.
For further information and a workshop schedule visit the RYA website.
Entries flooded in this summer for MDL’s annual photo competition, which for the first time this year included an under-16s category, alongside the coveted best photograph.
Berth holders, visitors and members of the local community from across the marina network submitted photographs that captured time spent in and around our marinas in the UK and Europe, including fast-paced action shots and footage out on the water, as well as some stunning landscape shots.
Hugely impressed with the quality of entries this year, judges were looking for entries that have succeeded in capturing in images what really makes each of MDL’s 21 marinas a truly unique destination – through the eyes of people who experience the marinas for themselves.
We are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2012 photography competition is David Thomas, with a winning image capturing a stunning sunset over Brixham Marina.
As this year’s winner, David will receive a Nikon Coolpix L810 camera, plus a workshop session with leading studio photographers at PhotoRed Commercial Photography, based at MDL’s Shamrock Quay. He will also be treated to a bottle of Champagne and tickets to the PSP Southampton Boat Show – where he will see his winning image displayed on MDL’s two-tier waterside pavilion.
Second place in the main competition, winning £100 worth of vouchers to use at London Camera Exchange, is awarded to Martin Makinen from Newton Abbott, for his beautiful shot of the sun breaking through the clouds at Holden Pier near to Brixham Marina.
For the first time, this year’s competition included a dedicated category for young photographers, with first prize in the under-16s competition going to Sophie Tuffier from Cherbourg. Sophie’s parents are Cruising Club members and were visiting Brixham Marina, where she snapped her winning shot of a beautiful sunny day in the water. Sophie will be presented with a Nikon Coolpix S30 underwater camera to help her continue her photographic endeavours.
Coming a close second in the under-16s category is 12–year-old Christopher Broughton, whose shot of sunset over Shamrock Quay has won him £50 to spend at London Camera Exchange.
All the winners will also receive tickets to the PSP Southampton Boat Show, where they will be presented with their prizes at the MDL stand (E52) on Wednesday 19th September at 2pm.
