MDL berth holders and local diners in Poole can now enjoy quality dining on the quayside, following the reopening of Cobb’s Quay Marina’s onsite restaurant and bar. Renamed Cobb’s Yacht Club, the restaurant offers a brand new menu, a new outdoor decking area and an elegant new interior, thanks to new owners Julia and David Sweatman.
The restaurant’s new menu offers everything from a hearty breakfast to a lunchtime snack or three course evening meal, overlooking beautiful views of Cobb’s Quay and Holes Bay. Cobb’s Yacht Club places a special emphasis on fish and seafood, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create outstanding seasonal dishes.
The outdoor decking area is the perfect place for diners to soak up the summer sunshine, or relax with friends after a day on the water, with a glass of something cold from the new bar menu.
Julia Sweatman, Owner of Cobb’s Yacht Club, said: “Cobb’s Quay Marina is the perfect location for us, thanks to its idyllic waterside surroundings. Our team has worked hard to create an exciting range of new dishes and the restaurant itself is looking great. Now that the summer is nearly here, we’re looking forward to customers really making the most of the outdoor decking area, which offers fantastic views over the water.”
Neil Salter, General Manager of Cobb’s Quay Marina, said: “The Cobb’s Yacht Club restaurant is a real asset to the marina and we have enjoyed seeing the work unfold at the restaurant. The new menu is proving very popular among staff and berth holders, many of whom have already become regular customers.”
Cobb’s Quay Marina was brimming with activity at the weekend as it welcomed local residents, boating enthusiasts and MDL berth holders and their families to its open weekend event.
Taking place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 May, the open weekend was held in conjunction with the RYA’s Active Marina Programme and offered a jam-packed line-up of events and activities. With so much on offer, visitors were kept entertained for hours in the spring sunshine from the likes of hula hoop workshops, RIB simulator rides, remote control boat races, a climbing wall and a fire juggling show, while a local choir provided the soundtrack to the bustling event.
Powerboat Training UK provided training sessions, which included man overboard rescue scenarios and correct flare procedure, while the RNLI provided onshore demonstrations covering sea safety, lifejacket checks and boat maintenance. Poole Boat Hire was also on hand offering boat trips and boat rentals throughout the weekend.
Paul Glatzel of Powerboat Training UK who ran various on water and shore based events, commented: "What a great weekend for berth holders, tenants and of course potential boaters who visited the event. There were lots of things to do for all ages - Cobb’s Quay was buzzing with activity and people enjoying themselves in the sun.”
The marina also hosted the Clipper Marine Used Boat Show, allowing visitors to browse a range of new and used boats on sale both ashore and afloat. Peter Keats from Clipper Marine said: “The Cobb’s Quay activity weekend was a great event; we’ve already agreed a couple of sales. Cobb’s Quay has a unique family atmosphere that extends to the onsite businesses and berth holders alike; the activity weekend provides the perfect setting for us all to meet up in an enjoyable and relaxed setting.”
The crowds took full advantage of the warm, sunny weather with many paying a visit to Cobb’s Yacht Club Bar & Restaurant. Owner Julia Sweatman, commented: “We were very pleased with the open weekend. We received lots of compliments about our newly refurbished bar and lots of customers enjoyed our new outside decking area overlooking all the boats. At one stage there was only standing room in the garden as it was so busy! Without doubt, though, the highlight of the weekend was the 55-strong Just Sing Choir. Their song selection and beautiful voices were very moving and enjoyed by all!”
Neil Salter, General Manager at Cobb’s Quay added: "We’re thrilled with the turnout the marina has seen over the weekend. It was brilliant to be able to showcase Cobb’s Quay and the facilities and services available. The weather was glorious which helped put all our visitors in fantastic spirits to enjoy the many activities on offer, but it was great to see the interest not only in the family activities and the boats on sale but also in the safety aspects of boating from training services and the RNLI.”
Visitors to the open weekend equally enjoyed the activities on offer:
“We totally enjoyed our afternoon here and it was an added plus that all of the children’s’ activities were free. The remote control lifeboats were the best! Cobb’s Quay is a new discovery for us and we will certainly visit again.” - Mrs Selby
“We had a thoroughly enjoyable day. It’s easy to forget how lovely it is to be out in the sunshine after a long winter but the setting here is fantastic. It felt like we were on holiday!” - Mrs Buckley
“We always look forward to exhibiting here. The atmosphere is fantastic and it's good to talk to so many happy boat owners.” - Nigel Oates, Below Decks custom boat carpets
The open weekend was part of the RYA’s Active Marina Programme, which encourages and supports increased berth holder activity including training, cruising and social opportunities, by partnering with marinas, RYA recognised training centres, berth holder groups and yacht clubs.

Six deserving youngsters who won a place on this year’s MDL Sail Training Awards are now back on dry land, after setting sail from MDL’s Ocean Village Marina on 16th April for six days at sea.
The MDL-sponsored awards, which have been running for over 20 years, offer admirable young people - carefully selected due to their exceptional accomplishments, or for overcoming adverse personal circumstances – the opportunity of a lifetime aboard a training yacht operated by Ocean Youth Trust South.
Joining a team on board the ketch 'John Laing' were Callum Archibald, 14, from Basingstoke, 13-year-old John Bratherton, from Fordingbridge, Erin Sutton, 14, and Jodie Beckham, 13, both from Totton, Oscar Perkins, 13, from Brixham and 15-year-old Robert Jelley from Romsey.
The 230 nautical mile trip saw this year's MDL award winners first heading for an anchorage in Studland, from where they motored into Poole on the Friday evening. Next morning they had a fabulous sail round the south of the Isle of Wight on a glorious day, ending up in Haslar. They sailed to Cowes for lunch, came out, anchored an Osborne Bay and planned a final pilotage exercise up to Southampton. RYA Start Yachting certificates were awarded to all participants.
Eamonn Feeney, Managing Director at MDL Marinas, commented: “We’re delighted to welcome back our Sail Training Awards winners following their exciting journey. This really is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for the young people selected, rewarding them for their achievements or inspiration and support to others.
“Over the years the MDL sponsored Sail Training Awards have provided over 140 young people the opportunity to experience a trip on board the 'John Laing', something which has been life-changing for some of our past winners. We are proud to continue to support Ocean Youth Trust South and the important work that it carries out”.
One of the scheme’s recent success stories is 17-year-old Toby Hunt from Bognor Regis who was one of the lucky winners selected to take part in last year’s trip, and has since been busy working as a volunteer, assisting Ocean Youth Trust South with its winter refit of ‘John Laing’. In addition, Toby has been working hard as a volunteer trainee Bosun for the 2014 trip and is looking to become a volunteer member of the sea staff for the future.
The six young winners from this year will now be invited to attend the PSP Southampton Boat Show, where they will be officially presented with their trophies at the MDL stand by the owner of MDL Marinas, Lord Iliffe.
Nominations for next year’s awards will be announced in December 2014.
